Peavy Update

The latest on a possible Peavy trade has suggested…
Yunel Escobar, Jo Jo Reyes/Charlie Morton, and another prospect for Peavy

I’m not crazy about this trade. I’m a big fan of Escobar and would be extremely hesitant to move him regardless of who I get in return. I firmly believe that Escobar has the potintial to become a player very similar to Derek Jeter and one of the top shortstops in the game for awhile.
Another issue is who replaces Escobar? Lillibridge isn’t ready offensively, but definitely good enough with the glove. Prado could replace Escobar’s bat, but would be a major downgrade defensively.
Free Agents include…
Alex Cintron, Alex Cora, David Eckstein, Adam Everett, Cesear Izturis, and Omar Vizquel all of whom aren’t good enough in my far from professional opinion.
A few name that are worth a mention are…
Rafeal Furcal would be a good fit, but he would be too expensive in all likelihood
Edgar Rentaria can get it done offensively, but his range has depleted and the Braves may be better off just using Prado
Juan Uribe isn’t much of a hitter (.247 avg/386 slg) but a solid defender and still a better hitter than Lillibridge.
Orlando Cabrera is a nice player with a decent bat and a good glove, and shouldn’t command an unreasonable contract probably the best option out there for the Braves
Trade possibilities could include…
Khalil Greene is extremely athletic and a great defender, but he struggled last season hitting just .213 (and even in his best years he was never much of a contact hitter-career high in 04 of .273) and ultimately too expensive with a 6.5 million dollars due to him next season
Clint Barmes hit 290 with 11 HR and 13 SB last year in 107 games and could be a decent fit if Escobar moves on
Bobby Crosby has had trouble staying healthy and hasn’t done much when healthy
The Angels have some depth at short with Erick Aybar, Maicer Izturis, and Brandon Wood and may be willing to move one of them

I don’t have a problem with trading Charlie Morton, even though I think he has a chance to be a good pitcher. If Jo Jo Reyes could be included as a significant part of this deal he will be, the Braves, as have most of the fans, have lost some faith in him.

If I’m Frank Wren, and I not, I would do everything possible to hold on too Escobar in addition to Tommy Hanson.

The Latest on Peavy and a Farewell to Pete

The Padres have been exchanging names with the Braves about a potential trade for Jake Peavy.

Indications are that the Padres are looking for a major league ready centerfielder and two young pitchers in exchange for Jake.

The Braves most certainly can pull this off. The problem is that Braves general manger Frank Wren has once again stated he doesn’t want to trade any of his top prospects, even if it means getting Jake Peavy. It is assumed that the ‘top prospects’ Wren is referring to are Tommy Hanson, Jayson Heyward, Freddie Freeman, Jordan Schafer, and Gorkys Hernandez. Now, if it was a guy who would be a one year rental I could understand this position, but Peavy is an elite pitcher under a favorable contract for the 4 seasons (and an option for a 5th). The Braves should be willing to at least part with one of these guys, especially considering they can’t fit Heyward, Schafer, Hernandez, and Francoeur all in the same outfield. There is also talk that a deal could send Yunel Escobar to San Diego in a deal for Peavy, I personally don’t think this is a good idea. Escobar is a truly special player whose production in the near future could be similar to that of Derek Jeter’s prime. I would not be opposed to a deal including Kelly Johnson or Martin Prado, although I would everything I could to keep both of them.

I have developed a trade that could make all parties happy…
OF-Matt Young
P-Kris Medlen
P-Jonathan Rouwenhorst
P-Charlie Morton
for
P-Jake Peavy

Matt Young isn’t quite a top prospect, despite a great year for the Southern League Champion Mississippi Braves. He hit .289 with 30 stolen bases and 11 triples. He also has had a good start in the Arizona Fall League hitting .385 through the first 11 games.

Kris Medlen was a third of Mississippi’s starting pitching trio. He had a 3.85 ERA and had 120 Ks in 120.1 IP and has gotten off to a good start in the AFL: 8 IP and a 2.25 ERA.

Rouwenhorst is an average prospect who had a 5.27 ERA in 41 games (14 starts) with Richmond. He has a good start in winter-ball: 5 IP with a 1.80 ERA.

Morton is a good prospect who was called up last season and posted a 6.15 ERA in 16 games (15 starts) after a good year in the minors.

I would now like to take some time and wish Pete Van Wieren farewell. Pete was a Braves
